This is your host, Denise Boomer and Dr. Bee Boomer, welcoming you to this weeks edition of the Baby Boomer Family on PodcastForBoomers.com.

This week we are talking about Trading Down.

Everyone is feeling the pinch in real estate. Homes over $500,000 were insulated from most of the ups and downs of the real estate market but no longer. If you own one of those homes, discount prices are necessary to sell in today's market. Great time to buy if you have cash. Banks are even doing short sales – agreeing to accept less than full price to avoid foreclosure. Because the economy is in the state it's in, everyone feels the effects.

This week we are talking about Pharmacogenics.

Pharmacogenics goal is to be able to pick the best drugs and dosages to the individual and to be able to do this before the prescription is taken. Today the only way we know an individuals reaction to a medication is to try it and wait. But tomorrow based upon an individuals genetic make up, the doctor will be able to choose the medication and dosage that will work best.

Today this is very limited as the genes responsible for the interactions of drugs are still being discovered. However an example of this in action is the drug Herceptin used in treating breast cancer. About 25 to 30% of breast cancer patients have a genetic marker called HER2. In these patients Herceptin is very effective. So breast cancer patents are screened for this genetic marker to determine if Herceptin should be used in their treatment.

Some day each of us with have a genetic profile that will help providers determine the best drugs and dosages to use tailored for each one of us.

This is your host, Denise Boomer and Dr. Bee Boomer, welcoming you to this weeks edition of the Baby Boomer Finance on PodcastForBoomers.com.

This week we are talking about $1 a day for food.

Can you live on a dollar a day for food for two people? The answer is yes believe it or not. But what are you eating? Is it nutritious and healthy?

A couple in Encinitas, California tried it for a month. Their diet changed over night. They had to give up many store-bought foods and dinners out. Even bread and canned refried beans were too expensive. Instead they bought raw beans, rice, cornmeal, and oatmeal in bulk. They made their own bread and tortillas. Fresh fruit and vegetables were not an option.

Breakfast consisted of oatmeal, lunch peanut butter and jelly sandwich and dinner often consisted of beans, rice and homemade tortillas. Homemade pancakes was affordable but not syrup. One of the biggest changes was the amount of time spent preparing meals. And lack of energy was a side effect of the diet.

A recent study of 370 foods sold in supermarkets in Seattle showed that junk foods – high in calories and low in nutrients – were far less expensive and dropped in price by 1.8%. During the same period nutrient-rich and low in calorie food like fruit and vegetables went up in price 19.5%. The old food pyramid is being replaced by the budget pyramid.
