This week we are talking about The Health Halo.
Imagine you are shown an "Applebee's Oriental Chicken Salad" with a 20 oz. cup of regular Pepsi. How many calories? Now you are shown the same salad and Pepsi plus 2 "Fortt's" crackers – "Trans Fat Free". How many calories? Well the correct answer is 934 and 1034 calories respectively. However the majority of people surveyed felt the second selection had fewer calories. Wrong!
When foreign visitors were given the same test, the majority answered correctly.
When given a choice to choose a lower calorie meal – Big Mac or Subway 12 inch Italian sandwich, most ordered the Subway sandwich plus non-diet soda and cookies. They choose the meal with 56% more calories.
It is felt the health halo is to blame. If it is trans fat free, it must reduce the total calories in the meal. Wrong it still adds calories. If you eat a subway sandwich, you will lose weight, maybe.
We have been blasted with the health advantages of trans fat free and eating certain foods with enable you to lose weight. No necessarily true. Europeans know that the amount of food not so much what food is the secret to losing weight – they got the survey right.
So even the "healthy" foods can cause weight gain if enough of it is eaten. Just because it is "healthy" doesn't mean you can eat all you want and not gain weight.
Watch out that the Health Halo doesn't cause you to eat more and gain weight.
Thanks to NY Times and John Tierrney for the heads up on the Health Halo.

This week we are talking about Vitamins.
Everyone needs vitamins but most of us get all the vitamins we need in our food. In this country it is not uncommon for people to take a daily vitamin. There are plenty of ads telling us we need to take vitamins every day. But is this good for us? Do we really need these daily vitamins? What about all the interest in taking mega doses of vitamins everyday?
First of all the minimum daily dosage of required vitamins can be found in a normal wholesome diet. There is no evidence that taking a daily basic multiple vitamin with help most of us but there is also little if any evidence that it would hurt us.
Mega doses of vitamins on the other hand have been shown to be dangerous at least under certain conditions. For example in Finland in 1994 a study showed that taking 20 milligrams of beta carotene increased the risk of lung cancer by 18%. Are these solid facts? Well like all studies the results can be and are debated. But of all the studies completed there seems to be an overwhelming evidence that mega dosages of vitamins do not help but can harm your health.
So why do people continue to take them? Believers in mega dosages of vitamins argue that the studies are all flawed and no study has be designed properly to show the benefits. As the argument continues, you need to decide for yourself what you wish to do – no vitamins, daily multi-vitamin or mega dose of different vitamins.

This week we are talking about Online Coupons.
We have all read about people cutting out coupons in the newspaper to reduce their grocery bills. Well in this economy people are looking for bargains online. And one way to find a bargain is to search for a discount coupon to use online.
So how can you find discount coupons online? Look to:
www.retailmenot.com
www.fatwallet.com
www.thebudgetfashionista.com
www.couponcode.com
www.couponmom.com
www.couponcabin.com
And there are more coupon sites. One other way is to do an Internet search with the name of your favorite store plus the word coupon. If you use Firefox as your Internet browser, www.retailmenot.com offers a free add-on that will notify you if there is a coupon for the store you are visiting online.
What people recommend is that you check for a coupon before you search the store. And if you don't find a coupon wait for a few weeks and see if you can't find one.
Now you must be aware that some sites may list out of date coupons or unverified coupons. So be aware of this possibility when you shop.
