This week we are talking about Encore Careers.

An encore career or post career or engaged retirement is a new or second career undertaken after the first career is finished. Over half the Americans between 50 and 70 want to find a career that has a social impact after their primary career ends. Are you one of these?

Finding that social impact encore career can be a challenge. But the non-profit organizations are facing a 600,000 senior management deficit. So there are opportunities especially if you have the experience they are looking for.

Harvard is experimenting with an Advanced Leadership Initiative that is designed to help people who want an encore career focused on a social problem to learn and find that encore career. Interestingly the final task for these students is not a thesis but a business plan.

Now that's getting practical.

Thanks for listening.

This week we are talking about The Cloud.

Cloud computing has gotten a lot of press lately. There are new small inexpensive computers that are designed for "cloud computing". So what is cloud computing?

Simply it is using the Internet for all of your needs. For example if you need to write a paper, you could use Google Doc's and it is saved on the Internet. This of the Internet as your own hard drive and program platform.

The biggest advantage to the user is that most of the applications are free and you could use your smart phone. So you have access to your work 24 hours a day every day of the year as long as you have an Internet connection.

That is why the new smaller computers designed for cloud computing are so cheap. They don't need a lot of power, the Internet supplies all the power you need.

So consider cloud computing for yourself, family, business. Yes it could work for your business too. Soon you will not need a large IT department only a high speed reliable Internet connection.

This week we are talking about Too Old?

The New York Times had an article about a 73 year old college basketball player – Ken Mink. Ken had played college at the regular college age but was expelled from school before he finished. That always bothered him. So after retiring and still enjoying basketball, he wrote to 8 small colleges in his neighborhood. One accepted him – Roane State Community College. So now he is one of their basketball guards.

He has a goal of scoring in the double digits, not in a game but for the season. Being 6 foot tall and with a good shooting arm, he can make the shots. His usual tactic seems to be to get fouled and make the free throws.

The opposition is not sure what to do but there have been threats that if he scores on you, the team will never let you forget it. Being beat by a 73 year old can be a problem for a twenty year old.

Ken's wife is philosophical about the whole thing. She also has a sense of humor. At one game she dressed as a retro cheerleader and held up a sign that stated "Ken Can, He's Our Medicare Man."

So it may not be too late for you to relive one of your dreams, no matter how old you are.
