Baby Boomer Technology – Passwords are Out
Welcome to this weeks edition of Baby Boomer Technology – Passwords are Out
Show Notes:
Computer and Internet security experts agree that passwords are not secure. That signing into a web site by giving it your name and password is not secure.
Well what about OpenID? OpenID still depends upon passwords. Not secure.
What they are recommending is setting up a cryptographically encoded conversation between computers. Using digital keys that we the users have no need to see. This is a system based upon cryptography.
We would replace our passwords with information cards – icons on our screen that we click on to log into a web site. The click starts the two computers talking in cryptographic code.
The software is only on about 10% of all computers and web hosts would need to adopt this methodology for it to work. Microsoft, Google and others are working to develop and promote its adoption. Even PayPal is on board.
What if you are on a shared computer? You could set up a pin number to protect your information card. This pin would not leave your computer and would not be seen by phishers.
Sounds better then the current system. Now all we have to do is wait for it to be adopted.
