The John Hopkins Health Alerts newsletter discussed 5 common myths and misconceptions about insulin therapy for Diabetes.
1. Needing insulin means you failed to control your diabetes with diet.
As the disease progresses diet and exercise may no longer completely control your diabetes and you will need to add insulin to your diet and exercise.
2. Using insulin is too demanding.
With a little practice most people are able to handle their insulin requirements with confidence.
3. Taking insulin restricts your lifestyle.
Taking insulin does require balancing your medication with your diet and exercise. But with the multiple types of insulin available, insulin can easily accommodate your lifestyle.
4. You will not be able to take insulin if you are afraid of needles.
Most people who require insulin become accustomed to injecting themselves. The needles are very small and very sharp so there is little pain.
5. There are too many risks to taking insulin.
With proper understanding of the effects of insulin and how to control them, the risks of insulin are greatly reduced.
