There was an excellent article in the NY Times on April 29th called "You Name It, and Exercise Helps It" by Jane E. Brody. You should read it.
Basically it covered a number of disease states helped though exercise. This help is not only short term but also long term.
Some examples of what you can lower your risk of:
heart attack
stroke
hypertension
diabetes
obesity
depression
dementia
osteoporosis
gallstones
diverticulites
falls
erectile dysfunction
peripheral vascular disease
12 kinds of cancer
Exercise can help if you have:
rheumatoid arthritis
multiple sclerosis
Parkinson's disease
congestive heart failure
osteoarthritis
hypertension
stroke
diabetes
knee or hip replacement
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
depression
This is just a short list. There are many other disease states that can benefit from exercise.
Remember to consult your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program.
