Show Notes:

Ever have a tooth ache?  Imagine having a tooth ache all day everyday that nothing relieves the pain.  Now we are talking about chronic pain.

Chronic pain that doesn't stop changes a person.  Initially they feel fear – what's wrong with me and is it treatable?  but the pain that does not respond (chronic pain) to treatment can lead to anxiety, depression, anger and irritability.  It is caused by injury and/or illnesses.

There are no tests for pain or the intensity of pain.  Most patients with chronic pain look normal.  Nearly 10% of Americans suffer from moderate to severe chronic pain and the prevalence increases with age.

The mass majority of these individuals are not malingerers.  They would not trade a life without pain for one with chronic pain.

Only about 50% of patients with chronic pain that receive the best multidisciplinary care are able to return to work.
