Show Notes:
As we all age, the risk of becoming a victim of age discrimination at work increases. More and more baby boomers are continuing to work beyond the usual retirement ages. As a result we will be in the work force longer. So what is age discrimination?
Age discrimination at work is when you lose your job or fail to get a job based upon your age and not your ability. There is a law, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act, to protect workers over 40 years of age. It states an employer may not fire, refuse to hire, or treat you differently than other employees because of your age.
What should you do if you feel that there has been age discrimination?
1. Talk with your employer and see if you can work things out.
2. If not, file a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. There are time limits to file so act accordingly.
Do your research before you act. Talk with a lawyer, the EEOC, AARP if you are a member. Know your rights and the time frames for filing. But if you feel you have been discriminated against, act.
