Show Notes:
BPA or bisphenol-a is a chemical used in the production of hard, clear and nearly unbreakable plastic called polycarbonate. Found in water bottles, baby bottles and aluminum soft drink cans (as a liner inside the can). BPA usually shows up in clear, shatter proof bottles. Studies have shown trace amounts of BPA leaching into food and liquids.
Canada is about to declare that BPA is carcinogenic. This has caused many retail stores to drop all products which use BPA.
In the U.S. it is being studied. There are some studies that would indicate carcenogenicity (cancer causing). But nothing conclusive.
So what effect might this have on our shopping? Many baby bottles and water bottles use BPA in their production. New softer bottles will need to be produced.
No one has an answer for the lining inside an aluminum can so they may disappear completely. Especially for canned products which contain liquids. The BPA prevents the 'can' taste from getting into your food.
This is not the time to panic. There is much still to be learned about BPA and its potential health effects. But you should be aware of the potential problem.
